Data Privacy Event at Harder+Company Community Research
Harder+Company Community Research (“Harder+Company”) of San Diego, California has advised its customers of a privacy event involving unauthorized access to the firm’s business email accounts.
Harder+Company is a California-based research, evaluation, and planning firm that works within the social sector. It works with nonprofit, philanthropic, and government clients—providing them with the information and tools they need to do their work effectively. It conducts program and organizational evaluations and studies across many areas including health, education, and community services.
Harder+Company recently learned that an unauthorized user gained access to some of the firm’s business email accounts that contained messages with some of its former employees and research participants’ information. Harder+Company worked diligently with a specialized computer forensics firm to investigate the matter and determined that this unauthorized access occurred between April 17, 2021 and August 12, 2021, without its knowledge. While Harder+Company cannot confirm with certainty all information that was accessed by the unauthorized user during that time, it conducted a detailed review of all messages in the affected email accounts to identify information that may have been affected. Harder+Company then promptly began notifying all potentially affected individuals that were identified through the process and provided them with the information and services described below to help protect their information from misuse.
The information believed to have been accessed or acquired by the unauthorized person or persons could include any combination of the following: full name, address, date of birth, Social Security Number, driver’s license number, health insurance information, and/or medical treatment information. At this time, Harder+Company is aware of no identity theft or fraud as a result of this incident nor does it have any indication that anyone’s personal information has been misused.

As an added precaution to help protect customers’ information from potential misuse, Harder+Company has arranged for identity theft monitoring and restoration services through IDX at no cost to those affected by the incident.
